and the two are to pay respects this afternoon to daniel inouye of hawaii. this has been going on for hours. they change the guard every half hour and notables come to pay their respects. senator inouye, of hawaii, first served us as a soldier in world war ii and was a senator, get this, for 50 years. inouye was a war hero. he lost his right arm while leading the platoon into battle in italy and awarded the medal of honor and died on monday of breathing complications at age of 88. he became hawaii's first congressman following statehood in 1969. he won election to the senate in 1962. only 31 people have laid in the cap doll rotunda and the last was gerald ford six years ago and the last senator honored was the democrat humphrey in 1978. he will be escorted to the washington cathedral and returned to hawaii on saturday to honor an american hero who died on monday. senator inouye. >>shepard: senator dole and his wife and harry reid and the rest on the late senator inouye, senator inouye often credited a man he met in world war ii army hospital in italy with getting him into politics. i messag

. this past friday before the president left for his family vacation in hawaii, he proposed a limited measure to avoid all of the cliff when speaker boehner scuttled his plan b, the president wants to extend the bush tax cuts now for the middle class and try to avoid some of these deep spending cuts on january 1st. a white house spokesperson says today that staff discussions continue between the administration and the hill. in july you may recall the senate democrats passed an extension of the middle class tax cuts if r a year at a -- for a year at a cost of 157 billion. that bill also patched the alternative minimum tax for 2012 for 92 billion, but it went nowhere after that. senate republican leader mcconnell is critical to hammering out a deal because he can filibuster any legislation, but his spokesperson says this morning quote, nothing new to report. we don't know yet what senator reid plans to bring to the senate for a vote. >> when i listen to the president, i think the president is eager to go over the cliff for political purposes. i think he sees a political victory at the bottom of

in history, daniel inouye died yesterday. he has represented hawaii in congress ever since it became a state back in 1959. he spent almost 50 years in the senate serving as chairman of the powerful appropriations committee and the senate's president pro-tem making him third in line for succession to the presidency. president obama praised the world war ii veteran and medal of honor recipient calling inouye a true american hero. he lost his arm fighting the germans in 1945. harry reid remembered his colleague yesterday on the senate floor. >> i have never known anyone like dan inouye, no one else has. the kindness and -- that he has shown me during my time here in the senate has been something i will cherish always. a man who has lived and breathed the senate. if there were ever a patriot, dan inouye was that patriot. >> daniel inouye's staff said his final world was aloha. he is survived by his wife, son and granddaughter. he was 88 years old. >>> republican congressman tim scott will be switching chambers next year becoming the first african-american u.s. senator from the state of south car

member of the u-s senate. senator daniel inouye has died. inouye represented hawaii continuously since it first achieved statehood in 1959. first in the u-s house, and then in the senate. he won his ninth senate term in 2010. inouye lost his right arm during a world war two battle in italy. he was awarded the medal of honor the nation's highest honor for valor. inouye died yesterday of respiratory complications. his office says his last word was aloha. a victory for the teen who took a stand against the makers of the easy bake oven. 13-year-old mckenna pope met with executives from hasbro yesterday. asking for an oven that's not pink or purple so that boys can use it. she says her brother wants one for christmas. well mckenna got her wish. hasbro says it will make a black and silver version of the popular oven and it will hit store shelves next fall. it also plans to change the packaging to show boys and girls on the box. just ahead the car company paying a record fine over safety violations. and, still to come this midday. executives at fast food giant mcdonald's is urging franc
